We are learning everyday that there are ways in which people with Parkinson’s disease can enhance their daily quality of life and even build impressive power, strength, flexibility and speed! By exercising with Coaches who know the ropes, you can fight your way out of the corner and start to feel and function better.

Boxing works by moving your body in all planes of motion while continuously changing the routine as you progress through the workout. These classes have proven that anyone, at any level of Parkinson’s, can actually lessen their symptoms and lead a healthier/happier life.

Rock Steady classes are divided into four levels based upon each person’s unique Parkinson’s symptoms and overall level of fitness. Descriptions of each level of class appear below**. We require all potential boxers to complete a 90 minute assessment with one of our Coaches to determine the class placement that would be of greatest benefit to them.


**Class placement is based on both objective and subjective data collected by Rock Steady Coaches during the initial assessment, and Coaches reserve the right to place new participants in the class they determined is most appropriate for that individual. The following descriptions are a general guide only and not to be used to pre-qualify for class placement.

Rock Steady’s class levels are based on the commonly used Parkinson’s staging scale, Hoehn & Yahr.

In addition to exercise, Rock Steady encourages the “Fun Factor!” Throughout our history, RSB has developed games, traditions and activities that promote FUN, keeping the morale high and the boxers looking forward to each class. Along with the boxing-style workout, it’s not uncommon to play with toys, footballs, basketballs and have a good time in our classes. Our Coaches are constantly weaving in creative and entertaining ways to combat a multitude of Parkinson’s symptoms.

Getting the right kind of exercise is part of the battle, but equally important are the social and emotional benefits people gain from Rock Steady. Our four levels of classes encourage intense exercise & functional fitness, as well as emotional and social support, which is vital to the well-being of people with Parkinson’s.

PD1 CLASS – (Hoehn & Yahr Level 1)

Symptoms mild, inconvenient but not disabling
Able to reach near-maximum heart rate
Participants are able to self-modify
Participants are able to communicate clearly with coaches
Cardiac issues are not present
PD1 participants usually already have experience in some form of athletics and are physically able to handle a more intense workout. The focus of this class is to improve over-all fitness, work on postural imbalances, deep breathing techniques and maintain a healthy body. Classes are fast paced and transitions are rapid between exercises. No assistance required.

PD2 CLASS – (Hoehn & Yahr Level 2)

Symptoms start to become bilateral
Minimal disability
Very little balance impairment
Posture and gait start to be affected
The focus of this class is to maintain fitness level, address postural imbalances, encourage deep breathing, improve balance and stress accuracy of movements. More time is given for transitions. Modifications for specific exercises are taught. Very little assistance is needed.
